There are many reasons why you can not open certain files in Windows. The most common issue is that you do not have the right program to open that file. It is also possible that a file will not work due to problems in the Windows Registry. Normally, you would ask an experienced friend what you should do or search for solutions on the web. A third option is to use Advanced File Optimizer. It will scan your files, display which ones are problematic, which ones require a certain application and more.

The software is free for personal use. The setup file is not large, so any Internet connection, from slow to fast, can cope with it. It works well with Windows XP, Vista and Win 7, regardless if you have old or brand new hardware.

There are three tools available for your files: a scanner, a manager and a monitor. Each of them can be found under different navigation tabs on the interface. Under the first tab, you can scan for files of a specific format by typing its extension in a dialog box and clicking a large button beneath it. If you want to scan all file types, you can click the button without typing anything. After a rapid process, the extensions will be listed on the interface along with their statuses (low, medium or high) and required actions. After clicking a button, over the list, the program will start fixing the detected problems.

The required actions are displayed as hyperlinks and clicking some of them will fix the issues you may have with a certain extension. For example, the action for some file types may be "suggest application." Clicking this hyperlink will open a new window with a list of suggested programs, along with their ratings. You can select one of the programs from the list and click a Download button. This will take you directly to the selected software's download page.

An extension can be associated with a different application under the Manage tab. The formats are displayed in a list and you can change the program they are opened or played with by clicking the hyperlinks next to each entry. Newly installed software are listed under the Monitor tab, along with the changes they made to file associations. Here you can choose to allow the modifications or keep the existing file association.

Pros

Scanning and fixing problems is a very fast process. The software can automatically fix problems related to file extensions and it will also suggest programs for some of them.

Cons

The only drawback is the lack of customization options for the interface, but it is nothing you would need urgently. Any problems you may have with file extensions or associations can be fixed with Advanced File Optimizer. It works fast and you can rely on its features.
